GLITTERING SCRIVENER

MARIA DAHVANA HEADLEY'S MANUSCRIPTS, ILLUMINATED
- Ron Mueck, Boy, 1999, mixed media sculpture. Mixed media. 193 x 193 x 94 1/2 in. Australian.

In truth, you need the scale to understand how amazing this is.  Gulliver in reverse. We’re the Lilliputians. A former puppeteer and creature creator for films such as Labyrinth, Mueck turned to hyper-realistic off scale sculpture a few years ago (his devastating Dead Dad, a small copy of his father’s dead body, was part of the infamous Sensation exhibit, along with Damien Hirst’s much more exposed Shark).
I find Mueck’s work to be incredibly moving, partially for the fantastical element - here are these giants and tiny people, who look exactly like we do - and for the perfect details, the hairs individually set, the ability to examine, three-dimensionally, humans, in all their terrified solitude. His characters tend to be alone, even when they’re displayed in scenes together.

- Ron Mueck, Spooning Couple, 2005
